Author: Charles Harding Firth
Charles Harding Firth was a British historian of seventeenth-century England, especially the Civil War, Commonwealth, and Protectorate. He became Regius Professor of Modern History at Oxford and combined narrative history with extensive editorial work on political and military records. The Parallel Between the English and American Civil Wars was the Rede Lecture he delivered at Cambridge on 14 June 1910. Rather than claiming that history simply repeats, Firth compares the two conflicts to clarify how institutions, geography, political rights, and the treatment of defeated groups shaped different outcomes. The lecture reflects his command of the English conflict while engaging American historians and Reconstruction debates. Firth also wrote Oliver Cromwell and the Rule of the Puritans in England, The Last Years of the Protectorate, and studies of the House of Lords during the Civil War. The Parallel Between the English and American Civil Wars shows his characteristic method: close comparison used to expose both genuine resemblance and decisive historical difference.
