About this book

Family fortunes built during the Reformation provide the starting point for Charles Harding Firth's account of Oliver Cromwell. Published in 1900, this biography follows Cromwell through the English Civil War and into the Commonwealth and Protectorate. Its scope joins military campaigns to disputes over Parliament, religious authority and the shape of government, with chapters on domestic, foreign and colonial policy.

The discussion of Cromwell's faith gives the political narrative a personal focus. Firth examines his habit of treating battlefield success as evidence of divine approval, and the confidence that conviction gave his followers. The opening's account of land, marriage and royal favour also places him within a family whose position changed with England's religious upheavals. For readers interested in seventeenth-century Britain, the book offers a way to study how inherited status, spiritual belief and public power worked together in one career.
