Charles Klein built an American stage career after leaving England in the nineteenth century. He wrote popular dramas about family loyalty, business power, public reputation, and the pressures created by modern institutions. The Music Master opened in New York in 1904 with David Warfield as musician Anton von Barwig and became one of Klein's defining theatrical successes. The Lion and the Mouse followed in 1905, setting a determined young woman against a powerful financier in a drama shaped by corporate influence and political pressure. The Third Degree reached Broadway in 1909, with Klein credited as both writer and director, and examined coercive police methods through a metropolitan family crisis. All three works circulated beyond their original productions through novelizations, revivals, and later screen adaptations. Klein's direct, topical melodramas made contemporary social conflicts legible to large audiences. His work also included opera librettos and collaborations, but these three plays remain central to his theatrical reputation.
