Charles L. Graves

Charles L. Graves was a journalist, humorist, and writer whose comic work often turned public events into polished parody. He wrote The War of the Wenuses with E. V. Lucas, and J. W. Arrowsmith published the book in 1898. Its target was the successful H. G. Wells novel The War of the Worlds, but the collaborators replaced the Martian invasion with an absurd visitation by women from Venus. The mock subtitle, claiming translation from the Artesian of H. G. Pozzuoli, extends the joke into the apparatus of authorship itself. Graves and Lucas divided the narrative into two parts and borrowed the pace, scientific language, and escalating alarms of the novel by Wells while redirecting them toward late Victorian gender satire. The original coauthor bylines and two-part division remain clear, and the Arrowsmith edition establishes the publication details. The War of the Wenuses remains useful not only as a period spoof but also as evidence of how quickly popular fiction could generate literary responses, imitations, and debates.
