Charles L. Hughes is a historian of music, labor, race, and the modern American South. Country Soul maps the recording economy that joined Memphis, Nashville, and Muscle Shoals during the 1960s and 1970s, the region he calls the country-soul triangle. Musicians, producers, songwriters, studios, unions, and record businesses crossed genre lines even when unequal power shaped their work. Hughes uses interviews and archival research to show how creative cooperation existed beside persistent racial divisions. UNC Press issued the book in 2015, presenting celebrated performers within the everyday labor of southern recording centers rather than isolating them as individual stars. Hughes later became director of the Memphis Center at Rhodes College, where his attention to local culture and civic history continued. Country Soul asks readers to hold two realities together: integrated sessions helped create influential music, yet the surrounding industry still reflected the political and economic inequalities of its place and period.
