The Bee Book began as a student brief at Kingston University in 2014, when Charlotte Milner was asked to pitch a picture book and chose the decline of bee populations, then much in the news. DK published it in 2018, written and illustrated by her, explaining pollination, life inside a hive and what the loss of bees would cost. It won a 2019 Outstanding Science Trade Book award from the National Science Teachers Association and the Children's Book Council. Milner graduated in 2015, works in London, and has since made The Sea Book, The Bat Book, The Rainforest Book and the Animal Alphabet Library.
