Charlotte Riddell was an Irish-born Victorian novelist whose fiction drew closely on London commerce, publishing, property, and the pressures faced by women seeking professional independence. A Struggle for Fame appeared from Richard Bentley in 1883 as a three-volume novel. It follows Glenarva Westley, an aspiring writer who comes from Ireland to London, alongside Bernard Kelly, another newcomer trying to build a literary career. Their routes through journalism, authorship, money, and social expectation let Riddell examine the practical costs hidden behind literary ambition. The novel reflects her own experience as an Irish immigrant working in the London publishing world, but it remains fiction rather than direct autobiography. Modern scholarship has emphasized its unusual attention to contracts, reputation, and the book trade. A Struggle for Fame was later recovered for new readers by Tramp Press in 2015. The work therefore links Riddell’s nineteenth-century knowledge of professional writing with renewed interest in neglected fiction by Irish women.
