Author: Christopher Pearse Cranch

Christopher Pearse Cranch combined poetry, painting, translation, ministry, and writing for young readers within the Transcendentalist circle. Poems, issued by Carey and Hart in 1844, gathered verse that had earlier appeared in periodicals including the Western Messenger. The 1857 illustrated fantasy Kobboltozo followed The Last of the Huggermuggers as its sequel. Its first Boston edition came from Phillips, Sampson and Company, with woodcut illustrations and printing by H. O. Houghton. Cranch’s sequel returns to the imaginative island world introduced through Jacky Cable and its giants, showing the playful side of an author also known for serious lyric work. He later translated Virgil’s Aeneid into English blank verse and published further poetry collections. Cranch’s combined literary and visual practice matters here: he did not merely supply a story for Kobboltozo, but helped shape the illustrated book as an integrated work for children.
