Ciano Aydin is a philosopher of technology at the University of Twente, where he has served as professor, department head, and faculty vice-dean. His scholarship examines how emerging technologies shape identity, agency, and the ways people understand themselves. Extimate Technology develops that project under the full subtitle Self-Formation in a Technological World. Routledge published the first edition in 2021 within its Studies in Contemporary Philosophy series. The book challenges a simple division between an inner self and an outside technological environment, arguing that selfhood is already formed through interaction with external conditions. Its chapters draw on pragmatism, phenomenology, psychoanalysis, and thinkers including Charles Sanders Peirce and Friedrich Nietzsche. Aydin applies those traditions to technologies such as brain imaging and smart environments while questioning whether enhancement should be the main model for human development. Extimate Technology therefore joins historical philosophy with current debates about engineered systems, proposing that critical self-formation requires attention to both personal agency and the technological world through which that agency becomes possible.
