Cristoforo Baseggio

Cristoforo Baseggio wrote from direct military experience in The Death Company, his account of the volunteer reconnaissance company he organized and later presented as a precursor to the Arditi during the First World War. The memoir begins with his 1915 service on the Venetian and Fassa fronts, then traces the training, discipline, and battlefield use of a hand-picked company intended for hazardous operations. Baseggio presents leadership through the practical details of organizing men, testing new methods, and sustaining cohesion under extreme pressure. The original Italian text appeared in 1929. English readers later received Gabriele Costarella's translation, accompanied by a preface from Giovanni Borelli. Antelope Hill Publishing issued that edition, while modern discussion of the book has emphasized Baseggio's role as founder and commander rather than treating the Arditi as an anonymous institution. The memoir therefore serves as a personal record and as evidence about the early history of an experimental Italian wartime unit.
