Dag Hammarskjold was a Swedish economist, diplomat, writer, and the second Secretary-General of the United Nations. He led the organization from 1953 until his death during a peace mission in 1961, developing its diplomatic and peacekeeping role through crises including Suez and the Congo. Markings The Enduring Spiritual Classic refers to Markings, the posthumously published English version of his journal of spiritual reflections. The journal appeared in 1963. His literary interests accompanied formal studies in history, linguistics, law, and economics. Hammarskjold also held formal membership in the Swedish Academy and translated poetry professionally. He received the 1961 Nobel Peace Prize posthumously. His diplomatic service gave those reflections a demanding public context. Markings differs from a public-policy memoir: its compressed entries consider duty, solitude, faith, and the discipline required by service.
