Dan Chaon writes novels and short stories in which unstable identities, family histories and unsettling coincidences reshape familiar American settings. Sleepwalk, published by Henry Holt in 2022, follows a courier living through aliases whose routine changes after a caller claims a biological connection to him. The novel joined a catalogue that includes Ill Will, Await Your Reply and You Remind Me of Me. Chaon’s collection Among the Missing reached the National Book Award finalist list, and the American Academy of Arts and Letters gave him its 2006 Academy Award in Literature. He taught fiction and literary studies at Oberlin, where he held the Pauline Delaney professorship, before retiring in 2018. His later novel One of Us appeared in 2025.
