Daniel Knower was a New York businessman and California pioneer who recorded his Gold Rush experiences late in life. The Adventures of a Forty Niner appeared in Albany in 1894 with the fuller subtitle An Historic Description of California, with Events and Ideas of San Francisco and Its People in Those Early Days. Knower recounts his departure from Albany, the journey west, mining work, commercial ventures, and the rapid transformation of San Francisco. He combines personal recollection with historical observations, descriptions of travel, and an appendix of supporting material. The original edition included illustrations and was printed by Weed-Parsons. Because Knower wrote as a participant rather than a later compiler, his account preserves practical details about costs, labor, transport, and daily improvisation during the rush. The Adventures of a Forty Niner belongs to the documentary literature of nineteenth-century California, offering both an individual memoir and a civic portrait of a city changing under extraordinary migration and speculation.
