Daniel M Rudofossi is a clinical psychologist, former New York City police sergeant, and writer specializing in the psychological demands placed on police and other first responders. Covert Operations Unveiling Organized Crime studies deep-cover work through Operation Donnie Brasco and carries the subtitle Using Operation Donnie Brasco to Understand the Complex Trauma of Deep Cover. Routledge published the book in 2022. Rudofossi draws on conversations with FBI agent Joseph Pistone, who lived undercover as Donnie Brasco while infiltrating the Bonanno crime family, and considers the resilience, functional dissociation, and mental adaptations required to survive sustained infiltration. He interprets those experiences through an approach he calls Eco-Ethological Existential Analysis, connecting individual trauma to the violent social environment in which undercover decisions occur. His combined police and clinical careers make the book neither a conventional Mafia history nor a detached diagnostic manual. It examines the personal costs that remain after an operation celebrated primarily for arrests and convictions.
