Dave Goulson writes about insects with the authority of a biologist and the curiosity of a lifelong observer. A University of Sussex biology professor, he is especially associated with bumblebee ecology and conservation. Und sie fliegt doch is the German edition of his 2013 book A Sting in the Tale, translated by Sabine Hübner; Hanser’s 2014 German release uses the subtitle Eine kurze Geschichte der Hummel. The book combines natural history with Goulson’s account of studying bumblebees and helping to restore the short-haired bumblebee in Britain. Its focus extends from colony life and pollination to the pressures facing insect habitats, giving scientific detail a personal narrative frame. Goulson also founded the Bumblebee Conservation Trust in 2006, connecting his research with practical conservation. His later books continue that public-facing approach, explaining how gardens, farming, and everyday choices affect the insects on which wider ecosystems depend.
