David Bowman

David Bowman combined fiction, cultural criticism, satire, and an interest in popular culture. This Must Be the Place examines the history of Talking Heads, following the group from its formation around the Rhode Island School of Design and early performances at CBGB through its art-rock success and eventual breakup. HarperCollins published the book under the full subtitle The Adventures of Talking Heads in the Twentieth Century. An American novelist as well as a cultural writer, Bowman also wrote Let the Dog Drive and Bunny Modern. His posthumously published Big Bang reimagines prominent figures and events from mid-century American life, with an introduction by Jonathan Lethem. Before establishing himself as an author, Bowman studied music at Interlochen Arts Academy and later worked in New York as a bookseller and bartender. His nonfiction about Talking Heads reflects the same interest visible in his novels: how art, public identity, ambition, and the cultural atmosphere around a creative project shape one another.
