David Hay Fleming was a Scottish historian and antiquary whose scholarship concentrated on the Reformation, church history, and the documentary record of Fife. John Howie of Lochgoin is his study of the farmer and religious biographer remembered chiefly for The Scots Worthies. First published as an article in the Princeton Theological Review in 1909, Fleming’s work examines Howie’s family traditions, his life at Lochgoin, and the books through which he preserved accounts of Scottish Covenanters. The University of St Andrews holds Fleming’s notes, article, and correspondence connected with the paper, providing a clear archival link between author and work. Fleming approaches inherited claims cautiously, distinguishing documentary support from long-repeated family tradition. John Howie of Lochgoin therefore serves both as a biography of Howie and as an example of Fleming’s historical method: close attention to names, dates, editions, manuscripts, and the circumstances in which religious memory became printed history.
