George Tybout Purves
George Tybout Purves was a Presbyterian minister, theologian, and teacher. A Philadelphia native, he studied at the University of Pennsylvania and Princeton Theological Seminary before serving congregations and later joining Princeton as professor of New Testament literature and exegesis. Faith and Life gathers sermons published after his death in 1901, with an introductory note by fellow theologian Benjamin B. Warfield. The Presbyterian Board of Publication issued the volume in 1902. Its sermons address Christian belief, worship, character, and daily conduct, preserving the pastoral side of a scholar whose career also included institutional leadership and historical writing. Purves produced numerous theological and church history works during a comparatively short professional life. Faith and Life therefore complements his academic reputation by showing how he translated biblical study into public preaching for congregations.
