David Kinnaman is a researcher and author whose work examines religious belief, public attitudes, and the experience of younger generations. He joined Barna Group as an intern in 1995 and later became its president and owner, overseeing research on faith, culture, leadership, and social change. In unChristian, written with Gabe Lyons, Kinnaman presents survey findings about how Americans aged sixteen to twenty-nine outside the church viewed Christianity. The book's full subtitle, What a New Generation Really Thinks about Christianity...and Why It Matters, makes its research question explicit. Baker Books published the study in 2007, and later editions revisited its findings. Kinnaman went on to write You Lost Me and to coauthor Good Faith with Lyons, continuing his focus on how Christian communities respond to cultural change. The value of unChristian lies in its combination of polling and interpretation: it documents negative perceptions such as hypocrisy and judgment, then asks Christian readers to consider how conduct, relationships, and institutional habits shape those conclusions.
