Author: David Small

David Small is an author and illustrator whose picture books join expressive drawing with sharply observed humor. Imogene’s Antlers begins when a young girl wakes to find that she has grown antlers. While the family members around her struggle to explain the change, Imogene and the household staff discover practical and playful uses for it. First published in 1985, the story became a long-running Reading Rainbow selection and was followed decades later by Imogene Comes Back! Small studied art and English at Wayne State University and completed graduate study in art at Yale. His wider career includes editorial illustration, book reviews, and collaborations with writers including Sarah Stewart, Judith St. George, and Toni Buzzeo. Recognition for that work includes a Caldecott Medal and multiple Caldecott Honors. In Imogene’s Antlers, her relaxed response and the family's growing confusion let Small turn an absurd transformation into a gentle comedy about acceptance.
