David Starr Jordan combined natural science, educational leadership, and prolific public writing while serving as Stanford University’s founding president from 1891 to 1913. His scientific career centered on ichthyology, while his essays ranged across education, ethics, civic responsibility, and natural history. The Story of the Innumerable Company appeared in an 1896 volume of historical and allegorical sketches linked by what Jordan called the idea of higher sacrifice. The Call Of The Twentieth Century, first issued as an address to young men in 1903, considers the character and discipline demanded by a new century that Jordan described as strenuous, complex, and democratic. These books represent a literary and didactic dimension of work better known for university leadership and the classification of fishes. Stanford’s later historical review also acknowledges the serious harm in Jordan’s advocacy of eugenics, an essential part of evaluating his legacy. Reading his essays today therefore requires attention to both their educational ideals and the exclusions embedded in his public thought.
