Scottish by birth and raised in Guernsey, Dawn O'Porter moved from television production into presenting, then built a documentary career on living her subjects rather than observing them, taking on the size zero trend in Super Slim Me and polygamous households in the Extreme Wife series. Her first book, Diaries of an Internet Lover, appeared in 2006, and the fiction began with Paper Aeroplanes in 2013, which draws on that Guernsey upbringing. The Cows in 2017 made her a bestseller. Cat Lady, published by HarperCollins in 2022, follows Mia, whose carefully assembled conventional life comes undone over a few days, leaving her to decide whether to keep performing it for onlookers quick to judge. O'Porter co-founded the refugee charity now known as Choose Love, runs the production company Hot Patootie TV, and returned to Britain in 2024 after about a decade in Los Angeles, living between London and Margate with the actor Chris O'Dowd and their two sons.
