Dean Wesley Smith

Dean Wesley Smith has built a long career across science fiction, fantasy, mystery, editing, publishing, original series, and licensed fiction. The Belly of the Beast launched the Star Trek: Starfleet Corps of Engineers novella sequence in 2000. Pocket Books placed the story aboard the U.S.S. da Vinci, where Captain David Gold's technical team investigates a defeated alien vessel with help from Geordi La Forge. The premise shifts attention from bridge command toward engineers asked to understand unfamiliar machines and solve problems under pressure. Smith had already written across several Star Trek television continuities and later recalled helping originate related franchise projects with editor John Ordover. The Belly of the Beast therefore serves both as a compact adventure and as an introduction to a specialist crew built for later installments by multiple writers. Its first-book position is central to the work's identity, since it establishes the personnel and engineering focus that organize the continuing series.
