Dean Wesley Smith has built a long career across science fiction, fantasy, mystery, editing, publishing, original series, and licensed fiction. The Belly of the Beast launched the Star Trek: Starfleet Corps of Engineers novella sequence in 2000. Pocket Books placed the story aboard the U.S.S. da Vinci, where Captain David Gold's technical team investigates a defeated alien vessel with help from Geordi La Forge. The premise shifts attention from bridge command toward engineers asked to understand unfamiliar machines and solve problems under pressure.
