Deborah E. Lipstadt

Deborah E. Lipstadt is a historian whose books examine modern Jewish history, public memory, and the responsibilities of historical argument. Yale University Press published Golda Meir in 2023, presenting Israel's fourth prime minister as a consequential and contradictory political figure. The full title, Golda Meir: Israel's Matriarch, belongs to the Jewish Lives series. Lipstadt traces Meir from a childhood in Kyiv and Milwaukee through Labor Zionism, settlement in Palestine, work within the Histadrut, diplomatic leadership, and national office. The biography places personal ambition and public service beside the difficult decisions that shaped Meir's reputation. Lipstadt draws on her scholarly background while writing for general readers, connecting one life with the development of the Yishuv and the state of Israel. The 288 page Yale hardcover defines the 2023 series edition. Within Lipstadt's bibliography, the book extends her work from historical denial and public testimony toward a focused study of leadership, political judgment, and contested legacy.
