Leonora Christina Ulfeldt
Leonora Christina Ulfeldt was a Danish memoirist and a daughter of King Christian IV and Kirsten Munk. Her marriage to the statesman Corfitz Ulfeldt drew her into the political upheavals surrounding his fall from royal favor. She spent twenty-two years confined in Copenhagen’s Blue Tower, beginning the work now known as Jammers Minde during that period and completing it after her release. Addressed to her children, the narrative combines recollection, self-defense, religious reflection, and sharply observed accounts of confinement. It became a major work of Danish autobiographical literature after its nineteenth-century publication. Memoirs of Leonora Christina, Daughter of Christian IV. of Denmark identifies a full English edition of her story, while Memoirs of Leonora Christina is a shorter catalogue form associated with the same autobiographical tradition. The different labels should not obscure the central authorship: Ulfeldt shaped personal adversity and court history into a sustained first-person record whose literary reputation extends well beyond its original family audience.
