Deborah Smith
Deborah Smith, an American novelist and editor, is known for contemporary romance and women focused fiction rooted in the modern Appalachian South. A former newspaper editor, she has published more than thirty novels and helped found BelleBooks, where she also worked in editorial leadership. Blue Willow, issued by Bantam in 1993, is one of her early large scale Southern family stories. It follows the intertwined lives of Artemas Colebrook and Lily Mackenzie across years of family conflict, ambition, separation, and enduring attachment. Her bibliography also includes A Place to Call Home, When Venus Fell, On Bear Mountain, The Crossroads Cafe, and A Gentle Rain. Her career extends beyond authorship through the development of BelleBooks and its Bell Bridge Books imprint, which publishes fiction across several genres. Publisher biographies identify Blue Willow among the books that established her bestselling reputation. The novel demonstrates the expansive mode associated with her work over decades: a relationship is placed within regional history, damaged family legacies, and the social consequences of choices made across generations.
