Dee Garretson
Dee Garretson writes historical adventure and speculative stories for teen audiences, drawing on an international-relations education and a strong interest in place. All Is Fair, published by Swoon Reads in 2019, follows Lady Mina Tretheway from an English boarding school into a coded wartime mission. Set in 1918, the story sends Mina home to Hallington Manor, where family friend Lord Andrew Graham and an American named Lucas need her knowledge for work connected to the conflict in Europe. Ciphers, covert movement, and Mina’s determination to contribute give the book the pace of a spy story. Garretson also keeps the social limits placed on Mina visible, making her intelligence and initiative central rather than decorative. All Is Fair was selected by the Junior Library Guild and later appeared in a 2020 Square Fish paperback edition. The novel combines teen historical fiction, mystery, and adventure, using a country-house setting and coded telegram to bring a large international crisis into one young person’s immediate world.
