Don Carlos Janes, an American religious writer and traveler who lived from 1877 to 1944, recorded a long early-twentieth-century journey in his best-known book. A Trip Abroad recounts his departure in July 1904 and visits to Britain, continental Europe, Egypt, Palestine, and other places connected with biblical history and Christian communities. The fuller original title, A Trip Abroad: An Account of a Journey to the Earthly Canaan and the Land of the Ancient Pharaohs, identifies both the itinerary and the author’s religious perspective. Janes combines practical travel observation with descriptions of churches, landscapes, antiquities, and meetings along the route. Later reissues sometimes detach A Trip Abroad from its lengthy subtitle, making it look like a generic travel narrative. Read in its 1904 context, however, it is a personal pilgrimage account shaped by Janes’s ministry, historical interests, and encounters across several regions.
