Ethel Brilliana Tweedie
Ethel Brilliana Tweedie was an English travel writer, journalist, photographer, and illustrator who published much of her early work as Mrs. Alec-Tweedie. A Girl’s Ride in Iceland grew from an 1886 riding trip made with family and friends; the published book combines practical travel episodes with observations of Icelandic landscapes and customs, and includes a contribution by her father, physician George Harley. Through Finland in Carts followed a later trip through Finland with her sister and a Finnish companion. That book records travel by small horse-drawn carts, encounters with local households, and impressions of Helsinki and rural areas in the 1890s. Both works make Tweedie’s movement through northern Europe their organizing perspective, with transport, weather, clothing, and hospitality forming part of her subject. Her books also preserve the period byline Mrs. Alec-Tweedie, which differs from the full name now commonly used for her. The two travelogues established a career that later included biography, social commentary, and memoir.
