Early editions appeared anonymously or under the initials M. P., part of Kilner's long association with the publisher John Marshall and the conventions of children's publishing in her period. She also wrote works including The Village School and Familiar Dialogues for the Instruction and Amusement of Children, maintaining her interest in readable stories with a clear educational purpose.
