Dorothy Kilner
Dorothy Kilner paired lively animal narration with lessons about conduct throughout her career as a children's writer. The Life And Perambulations Of A Mouse follows Nimble, a talking mouse who recounts his movement through different households and the human behavior he observes there. First published in the 1780s, the book uses a small creature's viewpoint to move between domestic scenes that a child reader could recognize. Nimble's adventures create curiosity and humor, while the people he encounters provide examples of kindness, carelessness, vanity, and responsibility. Early editions appeared anonymously or under the initials M. P., part of Kilner's long association with the publisher John Marshall and the conventions of children's publishing in her period. She also wrote works including The Village School and Familiar Dialogues for the Instruction and Amusement of Children, maintaining her interest in readable stories with a clear educational purpose.
