Duncan M. Hamilton
Duncan M. Hamilton is a fantasy and science-fiction writer whose adventures draw on medieval and Renaissance history, especially swordsmanship and political rivalry. The First Blade of Ostia is a standalone prequel connected to his Society of the Sword trilogy and set in the Middle Sea world. The story first appeared during 2014 and follows Bryn Pendollo’s ambition to become a professional duellist in Ostenheim, a city where arena combat confers status. His progress places him against Amero dal Moreno, the friend whose later life becomes important to The Tattered Banner. Hamilton builds the conflict from training, sacrifice, friendship, and the cost of public acclaim rather than from a simple contest between enemies. The author later called this Amero’s rise to duelling champion, told through another future academy master. A 2019 Podium Audio edition was narrated by Derek Perkins. Across Hamilton’s Society of the Sword, Wolf of the North, and Dragonslayer books, disciplined fighters meet institutions that shape both their opportunities and their loyalties.
