E. F. Knight

E. F. Knight was the publishing name of Edward Frederick Knight, an English journalist, traveler, soldier, and experienced sailor. The Classic Guide To Sailing presents his practical instruction on choosing a boat, understanding rigs, handling sails, navigation, weather, anchoring, and seamanship. The text originated as Sailing, a manual shaped by Knight’s own time in small craft and by the late nineteenth-century growth of recreational yachting. Amberley revived the work in 2014 under the current title, preserving historical advice while introducing it to modern readers of maritime writing. Knight was also known for travel narratives and reporting from conflict zones, and his seafaring experience informed books that joined technical detail with firsthand observation.
