Author: George S. Phillips
George S. Phillips was an English writer, lecturer, and journalist who published under his own name and as January Searle. Born at Peterborough in 1815, he began working in a solicitor's office before turning toward literature and public speaking. A Guide to Peterborough Cathedral appeared in 1843, when Phillips was still closely connected with his native city. Its fuller title promises a concise history of the former monastery together with an account of the cathedral's architecture from its foundation to the nineteenth century. The work also circulated as The New Guide to Peterborough Cathedral. It belongs among Phillips's earliest publications, preceding his later essays, fiction, poetry, and lecture work. The Peterborough volume reached multiple editions and served visitors while the railway reshaped local tourism. Its combination of architectural description and institutional history gave travelers a compact way to read the building and its past together. Phillips eventually worked in Lancashire journalism and literary education, but this cathedral guide remains a distinctly local product of his early career.
