Edward Francis Adams assembled two public addresses into The Inhumanity of Socialism, a compact statement of his opposition to collectivist political economy. The first paper, The Case Against Socialism, was delivered to the League of the Republic at the University of California in December 1913. The second, A Critique of Socialism, had been read earlier to Oakland's Ruskin Club. Adams argues from competition, property, production, and individual initiative, while acknowledging that his reading of socialist and anti-socialist literature was limited. The surviving edition contains conflicting dates: its title matter places the first address in December, but its foreword and Tomoye Press colophon are dated June of the same year. Paul Elder and Company published the book in San Francisco in 1913 under the byline Edward F. Adams. It is best read as a period polemic tied to California civic debate, showing how one businessman and writer framed anxieties about organized economic change, human nature, religion, and the reach of the state.
