Effie Kammenou is a Greek-American writer of contemporary romance and women’s fiction whose novels centre family, food, cultural inheritance, and second chances. Love is What You Bake of it opens the Meraki Series with pastry chef Kally Anadarakis, owner of the Coffee Klatch, and Max Vardaxis, whose arrival unsettles the independent life she has built. Family interference, an old heartbreak, and questions surrounding a missing grandfather connect the romance to a broader intergenerational story. Kammenou’s earlier Gift Saga began with Evanthia’s Gift and drew inspiration from her family’s migration from Lesvos to the United States. The later Meraki books continue with related siblings and combine each relationship plot with Greek traditions and a continuing historical mystery. Kammenou worked in the optical field for decades before publishing her first novel in 2015. Her use of recipes and café work in Love is What You Bake of it gives everyday labour and shared meals a structural role in the characters’ emotional lives.
