The Upside of Falling began as a serial on Wattpad, where it gathered tens of millions of reads before HarperTeen brought it out in print on 18 February 2020. It was Alex Light's first published book. She had been putting love stories online since her teens, on Wattpad and on Episode Interactive, and writes from Toronto. The novel drops Becca Hart, seventeen and stung by a former friend's teasing about never having had a boyfriend, into an invented relationship with Brett Wells, the school's quarterback, which stops being invented at roughly the point every reader expects.
