Elana Dykewomon
Elana Dykewomon was a novelist, poet, editor, and activist whose work centered lesbian and Jewish women's lives. Riverfinger Women, published in 1974 under her birth name Elana Nachman, follows a circle of young women building relationships and community during the social changes of the late 1960s. The novel's candid lesbian perspective made it an important early title in independent feminist publishing. Dykewomon later adopted her distinctive surname and used it across poetry, fiction, essays, and cultural work. She edited Sinister Wisdom from 1987 to 1995, supporting writing by lesbians from varied racial, religious, and class backgrounds. Her later novel Beyond the Pale traces Jewish women confronting persecution, migration, labor politics, and love across Europe and New York, and it received the Lambda Literary Award for lesbian fiction. Riverfinger Women stands at the beginning of this sustained project: representing intimate life as part of political history while refusing to treat lesbian characters as marginal to their own communities.
