Eli Saslow is an American journalist and narrative nonfiction writer known for reporting that builds national stories from individual lives. He worked for The Washington Post before moving to the Times newsroom and received Pulitzer Prizes for explanatory reporting in 2014 and feature writing in 2023. Doubleday published Voices from the Pandemic in 2021, gathering his close portraits of Americans living through the COVID-19 crisis; an Anchor edition followed. The fuller subtitle, Americans Tell Their Stories of Crisis, Courage, and Resilience, captures its oral, testimony-centered design. Saslow lets health workers, families, teachers, business owners, and other participants describe the pandemic's unequal pressures in their own circumstances. His earlier books include Ten Letters and Rising Out of Hatred, the latter about Derek Black's rejection of white nationalism and winner of the Dayton Literary Peace Prize. Across these works, Saslow uses sustained interviews and scene-based reporting to connect policy, belief, inequality, and social change with specific human decisions.
