Sophie McNeill serves as a Greens member of the Western Australian Legislative Council after a career in journalism, authorship, human-rights advocacy, and climate campaigning. Before entering parliament in 2025, she reported internationally for the ABC and SBS and worked with Human Rights Watch. Her reporting received Walkley Awards for television current affairs, radio current affairs, and international journalism. ABC Books published We Can’t Say We Didn’t Know in 2020 under the subtitle Dispatches from an Age of Impunity. Drawing on assignments in Syria, Gaza, Yemen, Iraq, and Australia, the book connects eyewitness reporting with civilians confronting war, displacement, state violence, and failures of international attention. Its structure reflects McNeill's background as a field reporter rather than presenting a detached survey of foreign policy. Her public career therefore links reporting with later advocacy and elected service, while the book preserves the testimony-centered approach that defined her journalism.
