Elias Johnson was a Tuscarora chief and author who presented Haudenosaunee history from within his own community's traditions. Legends, Traditions, and Laws of the Iroquois, or Six Nations, and History of the Tuscarora Indians appeared in 1881 and identifies Johnson on its title page as a Native Tuscarora chief. The Union Printing and Publishing Company edition brings together origin narratives, customs, political traditions, treaties, missionary encounters, and an account of Tuscarora movement from North Carolina into the Six Nations confederacy. Johnson openly distinguishes the knowledge shared by elders and community leaders from documentary material, making the work both a historical compilation and an exercise in intellectual responsibility. Its subjects include folklore, law, social life, and the political history of the Tuscarora Nation. Johnson's book is especially valuable because its organization connects story, governance, and history, showing that traditions are not isolated tales but parts of a continuing account of collective identity.
