Elisabeth Grace Foley often places mysteries and moral choices within carefully defined American periods. Lost Lake House is the second entry in her Historical Fairytales sequence and reimagines The Twelve Dancing Princesses during the Jazz Age. Published in 2016, it follows Dorothy Perkins, who defies her father’s rules to dance at an island nightclub, and Marshall Kendrick, a worker who knows the establishment’s concealed dangers. The story brings Prohibition-era glamour into contact with conscience, family responsibility, and the wish to escape a compromised situation. Foley has also created the Mrs. Meade mysteries and Western short fiction, extending her interest in period communities through both series and shorter forms. Jennifer Quinlan designed the novella’s cover around its historical atmosphere and relationship to the earlier Historical Fairytales volume. Lost Lake House relocates familiar fairytale architecture into a specific social world, where secrecy, illicit entertainment, and family authority give the old pattern new stakes.
