Elisabeth Sanxay Holding
Elisabeth Sanxay Holding moved from early romantic novels into psychological suspense and became admired for economical, closely observed fiction. Dell issued The Innocent Mrs. Duff during 1946 as Mapback 194. The novel places Jacob Duff’s self-serving perceptions at the center, using his unreliable judgments about his second wife, Reggie, to create mounting unease. Holding’s control of viewpoint makes domestic routine feel unstable without sacrificing realistic detail. Her wider suspense bibliography includes The Blank Wall, Net of Cobwebs, and The Old Battle Ax, while her career also encompassed short stories and earlier family novels. Library of America later included her work in its Women Crime Writers project, reflecting renewed attention to her place in mid-century American suspense. The Innocent Mrs. Duff also circulated in later combined and translated editions, including a 1949 Ace pairing preserved in the Elisabeth Sanxay Holding collection at the University of Wyoming. Those editions help distinguish the original Dell issue from subsequent presentations of the same work.
