Josephine Dodge Daskam Bacon (1876–1961) was an American novelist, poet and short-story writer who broke through with Smith College Stories (1900), a collection drawn from her own undergraduate years at Smith. She wrote steadily for the popular magazines across four decades, favoring realistic fiction with women at its center, and published under several bylines including Josephine Daskam and the pen name Ingraham Lovell. Away from fiction she was an early force in the American Girl Scouts and compiled the guidebook the organization used. Her verse had a second life in music: her hymn lyrics set to the Ode to Joy theme from Beethoven's Ninth were later recorded by Paul Robeson and Pete Seeger.
