Elisha Andrews

Elisha Andrews was an educator, economist, Civil War veteran, and university administrator who wrote a national history for general readers. History of the United States, Volume I, History of the United States, Volume 3, History of the United States, Volume 4, and History of the United States, Volume 5 belong to a six-volume sequence credited in full to Elisha Benjamin Andrews. The set moves chronologically from European contact and colonial settlement through independence, national expansion, sectional conflict, the Civil War, Reconstruction, and the later nineteenth century. Project Gutenberg preserves all six volumes separately, which makes the sequence structure especially important: the four listed relations omit volumes two and six rather than forming a self-contained edition. Andrews taught history and political economy and served as president of Brown University, experiences reflected in his attention to government, institutions, and economic development. The volumes also retain the interpretive assumptions of their publication era, so they are most useful when read as historical scholarship from the late nineteenth century, not as a current survey.
