Ellen Carol DuBois

Ellen Carol DuBois is a historian of United States women's history whose scholarship has emphasized political rights, reform movements, and the long campaign for suffrage. Through Women’s Eyes presents that history through a combined narrative and document-based approach, bringing letters, speeches, photographs, and other primary material into conversation with historical interpretation. Bedford and Macmillan Learning expand the textbook's title to Through Women’s Eyes: An American History with Documents. Earlier editions pair DuBois with historian Lynn Dumenil, while the sixth edition also credits Brenda E. Stevenson and updates the treatment of race, citizenship, migration, labor, and activism. DuBois is professor emerita at UCLA and has written extensively about the nineteenth-century women's rights movement. Through Women’s Eyes reflects that career-long interest while extending beyond suffrage to family life, work, culture, and public power. Its source-centered design asks students to examine how historical evidence changes depending on whose experience and voice receives attention.
