Elizabeth Inchbald was an English actor, playwright, novelist, critic, translator, and theatrical editor. A Simple Story, published in four volumes in 1791, established her as a novelist attentive to authority, conscience, and emotional restraint; Nature and Art followed in 1796 with a sharper comparison of social privilege and moral judgment. The wording Lover’s Vows refers to Lovers' Vows, her 1798 stage adaptation of August von Kotzebue's German play Das Kind der Liebe. The shortened title A Collection of Farces and Other Afterpieces, Which Are Acted at the Theatres Royal, Drury-Lane, Covent identifies the seven-volume theatrical selection issued in 1809. Bibliographic records credit Inchbald as its selector rather than the writer of every included play, and the full title continues through Covent-Garden and Hay-Market.
