Elizabeth Rolls taught music for several years and holds a postgraduate degree in musicology, which is an unusual road into Regency romance. She began writing in earnest in her thirties after staying with a friend whose shelves were full of the genre, and names Georgette Heyer, first met through her mother's copy of The Conqueror, as the reason she started. The Unexpected Bride was her first title with Harlequin Mills & Boon, and she has stayed with that house since. His Lady Mistress (2004) turns on a misreading: Max, Earl Blakehurst, offers an arrangement to a household drudge without recognising her as the daughter of a colonel he once served under, and the discovery leaves marriage as the only decent way out. His Convenient Marchioness (2017), the second of the Lords at the Altar books, pairs a marquess of fifty who needs an heir with a widow of thirty-two, the acquaintance beginning when her two children meet Fergus, the marquess's spaniel, outside Hatchard's.
