Ellie Marney
Every Breath moves Sherlock Holmes to contemporary Melbourne as a teenage boy called Watts, with Rachel Watts narrating, and the Australian working-class setting does more than the gimmick suggests.
Marney taught in secondary schools and writes about kids with jobs and money worries, which is rarer in young adult crime than it should be.
None Shall Sleep, later, put two teenagers to work interviewing imprisoned serial killers in 1982, and is considerably darker. She has also written for Australian television, and the crime plotting is tighter than the young adult label usually signals.
