Eggerichs pastored a Michigan church for nineteen years and holds a doctorate in child and family ecology from Michigan State. Love and Respect, published in 2004, builds a whole marriage programme on one verse of Ephesians, arguing that wives mainly need love and husbands mainly need respect. It has sold in the millions among evangelical readers. It has also drawn hard criticism, most thoroughly from Sheila Wray Gregoire's research team, for advice telling a wife to keep showing respect to a husband who is cruel, and for a passage on sexual obligation that counsellors say leaves women in abusive marriages at risk.
