Émile Jaques-Dalcroze was a Swiss composer, pianist, and music educator whose teaching joined rhythm, movement, ear training, and improvisation. Born in Vienna in 1865 and raised in Geneva, he studied in Geneva, Paris, and Vienna before teaching harmony at the Geneva Conservatory. Between 1892 and 1910, classroom experiments led him away from purely theoretical instruction toward the embodied method now known as Dalcroze Eurhythmics. The Eurhythmics of Jaques-Dalcroze presents that system in English, explaining how coordinated movement can sharpen rhythmic understanding and musical expression. The 1913 Small, Maynard edition also includes an introduction associated with Michael Sadler and material by Percy and Ethel Ingham. Jaques-Dalcroze later directed a purpose-built school at Hellerau near Dresden, where international students studied his pedagogy. He also composed numerous songs remembered in French-speaking Switzerland. His lasting contribution is both practical and conceptual: he treated the body as an active participant in musical thought, rather than separating physical response from listening, phrasing, and interpretation.
